About the event
This twilight CPD gives EYFS and KS1 teachers an exciting chance to learn how to deliver an imaginative introduction to composition - and to take all the resources straight back to their school. Led by composer Rick Peat, one of Into Opera’s musicians‑in‑residence, this session explores a five‑week module developed with primary schools that transforms voices, footsteps, and everyday sounds into imaginative soundscapes.
Rooted in national curriculum expectations, the module empowers teachers to introduce composition in playful, practical ways while connecting music to the local environment. Pupils begin with simple contrasts (loud/quiet, high/low), link rhythm to storytelling through We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and take 'Listening Walks' in your local area to inspire soundscapes from footsteps to birdsong, rustling leaves, laughter, or perhaps even the sound of buses!
By sequencing these sounds into collaborative compositions, children learn to shape music with beginnings, middles, and ends, while building confidence, curiosity, and teamwork.
